As I picked a huge bowl of peas from the boxes on top of the garage yesterday, I admired my new irrigation system with great delight. Knowing that this was all recycled rainwater made it even better...How to keep the veges on the roof watered well enough has been a bit of a puzzle. However, the problem has been solved by a bit of lateral thinking.
The City Council recycling bin makes a great water storage vessel, hooked up to a downpipe from the roof of the house.
Our house happens to be about 10 metres higher than the bottom garden where the garage is, so we can put a hose into the recycling bin, run it down into the garden and up onto the garage roof. A bit of a suck on the end of the hose starts the water flowing, and ...there you have it, happy plants.

Now, how to create an irrigation system so that I wouldn't have to stand there for a long time, watering by hand? I found a few old loops of hose, poked holes in it and ...perfect :)
